#17047 (Flora, MS)
The location & position of a project are always the basic set of input factors when initial design decisions are being made. This particular site is several acres located several miles from any urban municipality and features a new pond, pastured grass with wooded areas…surrounded by other agricultural properties as far as the eye can see. The setting feels like a characteristic Mississippi farm, which seems appropriate for a historic small farmer’s cottage… one of which (Sedgewood Farm) sits within a mile of this site built in 1840’s. This typology of small Greek Revival architecture with undercut gallery was a typical aesthetic and academic style choice across Mississippi in particular during the development decades of the 1800's. Not to be forgotten. . . how does a modern home design deal with the unattractive automobiles? We decided to design the detached garage to resemble a small sharecropper’s cabin or cottage, which is perfectly appropriate for this location, climate, history and geography.
