Milton HS Historic Log Cabin
#16060 (Alpharetta, GA)
1934, Professor Pierce L. Elkins won a 75-dollar prize for a forestry presentation. He proposed taking the money to build a log cabin on the property of Milton High School. The local Future Farmers of America organization consisting of high school aged boys served as the labor force, collecting materials, crafting and assembling the pieces of the building. For decades the cabin served the community holding proms, community meetings, wedding receptions, etc. With its site slated for redevelopment, the cabin was in danger of being lost forever. A new location for the cabin was found right across the street - it resembles the original site - large old-growth trees and a lawn spilling down to woods. Standing inside at the window with the rebuilt stone fireplace, it’s easy to imagine what old Alpharetta once felt like. The restoration includes a few new restrooms (something absent before the move) and a new basement with much needed office and storage space for the Alpharetta and Old Milton County historical society.
